The 2016 Ghostbusters movie was a reboot rather than a sequel, so the story started from scratch with an entirely new all-female cast and a modern-day setting.

Unfortunately, during the filming of Ghostbusters II, the original Ghostbusters car “died.” The team scrambled to buy another, more reliable model to complete the movie. After both films wrapped, Universal Studios purchased the original, leased jalopy to convert into a third Ectomobile for display purposes. But they fix up the long-wheelbase wagon and paint it white. They also install a siren, a roof-full of gadgets, and a ladder. Next, they convert the ambulance’s pull-out gurney into a rack to hold their ghost-capturing proton packs.

 

Here are the top five Ecto-1 toys for you to enjoy while you’re waiting for the new movie to come out. In real life, Stephen Dane designed and oversaw the creation of the Ecto-1. It measured nearly 20 feet long and weighed around 3 tons.

 

At first glance, the car may seem like an old body on a newer chassis, but that’s actually quite convoluted even for movie making. So what happened was the production designers built the car just for this film. Other than a hilariously oversized emergency light and what look like soda kegs mounted on the roof, the new ECTO-1 isn’t nearly as visually interesting as the original movie’s car. (Cars from the ’80s rarely were as striking as ones from the ’50s.) The interior, which I could barely see through reflective glass and locked doors, looked stock standard.

 

Two Ecto-1’s were created for the first movie with one serving mainly as a prop. But when the original one died during production of Ghostbusters II they had to quickly renovate the ‘prop’ version. On screen the Etco-1 had a make-over adding some digital billboards and yellow and black hazard stripes. Brian Baumgartner, Justin Kirk, and Elizabeth Perkins have cameo appearances in the extended cut as hotel guest Frank the Mercado, city official Phil Hudson, and university professor Phyllis Adler respectively. In 1989 a sequel was released, while a new attempt was made in 2016 with a reboot … but now, 37 years later, Ghostbusters Afterlife is released.

 

Ecto-2 was rebuilt and used on standby during a rescue operation until Poso was trapped. During a TV special about Al Capone, the Ecto-2 was teleported to the Netherworld with the Ghostbusters and Slimer. In order to trap Capone, his baseball bat needed to be destroyed first. Winston ejected Ray and flew Ecto-2 into Capone’s swing radius. Winston had set his Proton Pack to automatic self-destruct and ejected from the Ecto-2. The plan was a success and the weapon was disintegrated.

 

He purchased the vehicle for $4,800 and performed the extensive repairs needed to bring it up to a condition that would suit their needs. It was painted white with red trim, marked with the company logo on the sides and rear, and fitted with an array of equipment on the roof, and became a well-recognized symbol for the Ghostbusters franchise. The interior was modified to allow easy access to the team’s equipment (Proton Packs, ghost traps, etc.) via the rear door. After the necessary reconstruction, it is used to carry the Ghostbusters and their ghost-capturing equipment through New York City. Its features include a special pull-out rack utilizing the old ambulance’s gurney in the rear containing the staff’s proton packs. There are also various gadgets mounted on the top, whose functions are never revealed in the movies.

 

Leslie Jones brings Patty Tolan to life, a civilian drawn into ghost busting after coming face to face with subterranean spectres. Patty also supplies the team with their uniforms and the Ecto-1. Sony has also revealed a new poster for the film, with the full main cast and Ecto-1 taking the supernatural spotlight.

 

A miniature replica of the vehicle was mass-produced as a children’s toy. Polar Lights released a 1/24 scale model kit of the Ecto-1 in 2002. In 2010, Hot Wheels released a “Ghostbusters Ecto-1” as part of the “2010 Hot Wheels Premiere” series. Earlier versions of scripts written by Aykroyd for the first Ghostbusters also includes mentions of the Ectomobile having the power of interdimensional travel.

 

After Rowan had changed to his destroyer form, the Ecto-1 was sighted again near the Portal. A lot of power was needed to reverse the polarity of the portal and draw all the ghosts back in. Holtzmann theorized if they could get the reactors super-critical inside the vortex, the beta radiation could reverse the polarity.[3] Erin realized it would cause a total protonic reversal. Abby equated the plan to turning the portal into a giant ghost trap and called Patty a genius. Abby told everyone to focus on narrowing the car’s path.

 

For the new movie, ECTO-1 is also a Cadillac again, and it’s a Reagan-era Fleetwood hearse—probably something that would have actually been in service in real life while the original Ghostbusters was in theaters. And besides Ecto-1’s new look as a car that is clearly a hearse, instead of the more ambiguous previous model, is much more fitting with the ghost motif. This movie features a number of updates from the 1984 film, both in the new cast and in 2016 mega budget effects but the Ecto-1 has been upgraded from the iconic 1959 Cadillac ambulance to  a 1982 Cadillac DeVille hearse.
